Fences for Single Family Homes

Zoning Bylaw 1850:

  • No fence shall exceed 2.3 metres in height; does not apply in Industrial, Park or Institutional zones.
  • In In the R4.1 and CD23 zones, no fence within a front yard shall exceed 1.0 metres in height.
  • In the CD24 zone; no fence within a front yard shall exceed 1.25 metres in height.
  • The height of a fence shall be determined by measurement from the highest point of the fence to the average established ground level within 1.0 metre of both sides of the fence, as shown in Figure 1.

If the subject property is located on an intersection, then the following will apply:

In the area bounded by the intersecting lot lines at a street corner and a line joining points along the lot lines, 6.0 metres from their point of intersection (see Figure 2),no structure or building shall be within 1.0 metres to 3.0 metres above the crown of the abutting streets, and no vegetation shall be maintained or allowed to grow so as to obstruct the zone of visual clearance between 1.0 metres and 3.0 metres above the crown of the abutting streets (see Figure 3).

If the subject property is within Development Permit Area #11 – Wildlife Corridor, the maximum height of a fence is limited to 1.20 metres above finished grade. See relevant OCP maps to determine if the property is within this Development Permit Area.
