Comox Community Centre Gets Green Light to Open

Comox, BC - The Comox Community Centre begins the first phase of its restart Monday, June 22 at 7:00am with registration for summer recreation programs and new, Fitness Studio pre-registered admissions.

Summer program information is available at comox.ca/rec-guide. Pre-registered, outdoor Zumba classes start Monday, June 22. Soccer and art camps start Monday, June 29. Summer day camps and select fitness programs start Monday, July 6.

The Fitness Studio opens Wednesday, June 24, weekdays 7:00am – 2:45pm with pre-registered admissions. Fitness Studio pre-registered time slots ensure the occupancy limit for physical distancing is maintained. A phased re-opening keeps the community and customers safe and allows staff to add more services and operating hours as conditions improve and direction from relevant authorities change.

These authorities include the Province, BC Parks and Recreation Association, provincial health authorities and WorkSafeBC. Following their recommendations staff thinned equipment from the Fitness Studio to facilitate physical distancing. Access is only by pre-registered time slots: 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 12 noon, or 1:30pm. Each 75 minute workout is followed by 15 minutes for staff to clean equipment.

Registration will open 48 hours before each time slot. Visit comox.ca/fitness-studio to register and secure a workout. We encourage everyone to use our online system but phone and in-person registrations at the Community Centre are available Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 3:00pm. The cost of a Fitness Studio visit is discounted from the regular drop-in rates: adults $6.25, seniors $5.25 and student $4.25. Full schedule and registration information is available at comox.ca/fitness-studio.

Community Centre fitness passes were frozen March 17, 2020 when the building closed. Customers with passes have the option of a pro-rated credit on their account to use for the new registered Fitness Studio time slots, keeping their passes frozen until the Community Centre returns to pre-COVID-19 operations, or receiving a pro-rated refund by cheque.

Acting Mayor Kent Grant, “We’re very excited to see the Community Centre reopen. Our staff have worked hard to come up with a system to allow our services to restart. The most convenient way is to register for your Fitness Studio time slot is online. You can create an account, plan your fitness routine from your home or the office, anywhere, and it’s always on your terms and time.”
