The Dead Boats Disposal Society (DBDS) will be working throughout this week to remove 18 abandoned vessels from the Comox shoreline.
DBDS is a non-profit organization that works to remove sunken or abandoned boats and debris from the ocean. They work with Salish Sea International Services, Esquimalt First Nations, Songhees First Nation, the BC Government, and other related organizations.
“The Comox shoreline is a treasured landmark in the Comox Valley,” said Mayor Russ Arnott. “Removing these abandoned vessels will not only reduce water pollution but will further restore the natural beauty of our coastlines. Thank you to the Dead Boats Disposal Society and the many organizations they work with to keep our oceans clean and free of excess debris.”
With a goal of removing 100 abandoned vessels from the Salish Sea, the DBDS has received support from the provincial government, with $2 million in funding from the Clean Coast Clean Waters Initiative.
The Dead Boat Disposal Society and Town of Comox would also like to thank K’omoks First Nation for their assistance in locating and removing the boats and debris.
