It is in our best interest to participating fully in the organics (food & yard waste) and recycling programs in order to:
- create the least negative impact on the environment
- reduce the amount of waste being sent to the landfill in order to extend its lifespan which defers major capital expenditures.
The Town of Comox has partnered with the Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) who sustainably manage organics (food and yard waste) for residents who receive the municipal organics collection service.
- Sending organics to the landfill would take up valuable space and create harmful greenhouse gases therefore, organics are diverted to the new Regional Organics Composting facility in Campbell River which is operated by the Comox Strathcona Waste Management Service (CSWM). It is transformed into nutrient rich compost for agriculture and landscaping use.
- CSWM has an Organic Matter Recycling Regulation Permit with the Province - click here to learn more. They set the guidelines for cart liners and what is acceptable as organic cart content.
- Food and yard waste are co-mingled and are collected weekly.
- Place curbside by 8am.
- Cart lid must be fully closed - no branches sticking out the top.
- Compostable/biodegradable plastic bags or cellulose lined paper bags are not accepted in the organics cart.
- Weight limits:
- 360L Cart max weight limit = 332.5 lbs
- 240L Cart max weight limit = 227.5 lbs
- 120L Cart max weight limit = 122.5 lbs
PET WASTE & LITTER:
Please do not put garbage, pet waste and litter into your Organics cart - the cart will not be collected. If an Organics truck load is contaminated, the entire load must be diverted to the landfill, which is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve. Please review the FAQs section below to see what is accepted and what is not.
